Nicci brushed a lock of blonde hair behind her ear with her new, slim fingers. She wasn't quite used to this body yet, and she wasn't positive that she ever would be. She had light skin, blonde hair and a slim body- traits of a full-blood D'Haran. She was used to her Midlander body- dark hair and skin, round hips and full lips. She didn't like it at all. It was not that she was vain or ungrateful for Sister Portia's body, but she wanted her own body back. Nicci sometimes wished that she was still dead, serving the Keeper in the Underworld. But then again- she could serve better here, in the land of the living.
Nicci shook her head, clearing her mind of such petty thoughts. Now was not the time to reflect on such issues. She dipped her hands into the water of the lake, shattering the reflection of her face in the water as she washed the dirt from the road off of her hands. The feeling of the cool water felt good on her hot skin. The summer sun was relentless on her fair skin. This skin burned easily. She could feel her shoulders blistering under the relentless summer sun above her head. Perhaps she could spare a few minutes.
Nicci sat down on the edge of the lake and pulled off her boots and stockings. Her feet hurt. It was no wonder. There were several blisters forming on her ankles and heels. These feet wern't as adapted to walking for so long as her old feet were. Eventually, these blisters would turn into callouses and would no longer hurt her. But until then, the cold water on her feet would have to suffice.
Nicci stood up, leaving her veil on the bank with her boots. Gathering up her skirts in one hand, Nicci walked slowly into the Lake. The water swirled around her ankles, then higher to her calves, then her knees. She stopped only when the water reached her mid-thighs. The water felt wonderful on her sore legs and feet. She wished she had time to rest and to bathe her entire body, and contemplated the idea for a minute. The small lake was almost a quarter mile away from the road and surrounded by a thick layer of dense trees, she would have a hard time being spotted by any passer-by. But the time to do so was a luxury she didn't have. She needed to focus on the task at hand.
Nicci trailed the fingertips of her free hand in the water, reciting a spell that Odette had taught her. Magic shimmered on the water, turning it a strange green color. Cupping the water in her hand, she brought the magic water up to her lips to drink. The water filled her belly like food would. Three more times she dipped her hand into the water and drank before she was full. She wouldn't be able to live off of the substance for much longer, but it would suffice for now. She would have to stop at the next tavern to rest and eat.
Nicci released the spell on the water, letting the magic flow back into her Han. But before she could utter the next incantation, the sound of a twig snapping stopped her. She spun around, slowed by the water, to look and see who it may be. "Who are you?," she demanded, "What do you want?" A spell of protection was on the tip of her tongue, her magic right under her fingertips, waiting for any form of attack from the stranger.
